So you’re in a fitness class, maybe for the first time, maybe you’re a seasoned practitioner. Either way, in the back of your mind you are secretly wondering “Does this chick expect me to follow everything she says?” Well of course not!! Here’s the scoop on what your fitness instructor would most likely expect, so take a breathe and relax:
Instructors curate workouts with specific goals in mind. The reps, the sequencing, and the timing are all meant to give a well rounded workout to each and every student partaking in class. However, the instructor does not know how each movement feels within your specific body. The key is to listen; to your own body.
The instructor provides the framework and the student is to make wise choices based on their individual energy level, experience level, and any physical limitations they may have. Remember to take advantage of any modifications or alternate moves that are provided by the instructor. It’s always better to complete a move correctly at your level than to push through to a level you are not ready for and risk injury. Personally, in my classes, I always remind my students that taking a moment to pause or rest during the class is also a great idea when your body is suggesting that.
The bottom line is to take what works for you and adjust what doesn’t. Fitness instructors are there to support you and energize you and encourage you to keep coming back! Instructors are by no means there to set impossible standards. So, use their expertise as a guide but don’t ever feel pressured to have to follow their cues verbatim.
As you continue to become more self aware, you will understand how to adjust the workouts in a way to keep it fun and challenging…. and keep you wanting more!
Peace and love to you all!!
